Who is Quetzal?
Quetzal, born Luis Romero, is a visionary leader, healer, and advocate for human potential. He is grounded in the wisdom of his Mayan heritage as a traditional firekeeper and medicine man. His journey has been one of profound transformation, symbolized by his spiritual name, Quetzal, which represents the shedding of old paradigms and the emergence of liberated consciousness.

Quetzal's path has been marked by both spiritual awakening and profound personal challenges, including an experience of unjust incarceration. This experience gave him a unique insight into the systemic barriers marginalized individuals face, particularly those re-entering society. He has witnessed firsthand the impact of lacking self-calibration, clear core values, and supportive guidance, solidifying his commitment to restoring dignity and fostering empowerment.

Driven by a deep sense of purpose, Quetzal is now channeling his spiritual gifts and life experiences to create tangible change. He is the founder of the Fresh Start Center, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing housing and comprehensive support services to formerly incarcerated individuals in Oakland. He believes that by offering a safe haven, life skills training, and pathways to healing, individuals can break the cycle of recidivism and reclaim their rightful place within the community.

Beyond his spiritual and advocacy work, Quetzal possesses a strong foundation in business and practical skills. As the former owner and operator of Harmony Handyman Services (Alameda County BLN: 129888), he managed all aspects of a successful construction business for nine years, from estimation and client management to employee supervision and marketing. This experience honed his abilities in project management, problem-solving, and building strong client relationships, skills that are invaluable in leading and scaling a non-profit organization.

His extensive hands-on experience in the construction industry, including demolition, framing, electrical, plumbing, and finishing carpentry, provides him with a unique understanding of the practical challenges faced by individuals seeking to rebuild their lives. Furthermore, his experience as a Maintenance Supervisor and Technical Lead demonstrates his ability to manage teams and oversee complex projects.

Quetzal's vision extends beyond immediate support; he aims to cultivate a collective awakening, empowering individuals to rediscover their inherent worth and contribute to the healing of our world. He integrates the wisdom of his indigenous roots with practical solutions, bridging the gap between spiritual understanding and tangible action. He continues to honor the teachings of his father, Apolinario Chile Pixtun, and the many elders who have guided him, serving as a beacon of hope and transformation for those seeking a fresh start.
